Iyengar yoga is the
PhD of yoga

The Benefits of Iyengar Yoga

The benefits of using props in the tradition of Iyengar Yoga are twofold. It allows you to practice asanas with greater precision and stability, and when the body is supported, the mind can open and accept the benefits of the yoga.

Iyengar Yoga has been proven to provide relief from chronic health problems such as:
  • Arthritis
  • Back pain
  • Hypertension
  • Migraines
It may improve the practitioner’s health in all aspects of well-being:  mind, body, and spirit.

What Is the Iyengar Method?

Iyengar's method is a form of hatha yoga that strongly emphasizes the alignment of the body. It draws from the Ashtanga (Eight-Limbed) philosophy of Patanjali.

Iyengar Yoga practitioners focus on developing increased flexibility, strength, stability and awareness.
The asana practice has total wellbeing as it's core.   Iyengar Yoga uses props such as blocks, straps, blankets,  trestles, numerous specialty wooden shapes, wedges,  yoga chairs and rope walls to allow access to over 200 classical asana.   BKS Iyengar developed 14 versions of pranayama (breathwork) to encourage the practitioner to a state of physical and psychological wellbeing through focused breathwork.  The emphasis of an Iyengar Yoga practice is to calmly abide in the body and mind. BKS Iyengar described the practice as "the request of the soul for the spark of divinity within us."

To learn more about the Iyengar method, please visit the official B.K.S. Iyengar website.

Yoga Center of Denver Background

The Center was founded in June, 2001 By Craig Kurtz, Kila Lau, Gary and Donita Reitze.   The Yoga Center is rooted in the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, and his children, Geeta and Prashant Iyengar of Pune, India.  Mr. Iyengar believed that yoga is for everyone, regardless of strength, flexibility, age, or other perceived weaknesses.

At Yoga Center of Denver, highly trained teachers who are certified in the Iyengar method, guide students in developing precise body alignment.  Teacher certification is especially rigorous in the Iyengar method.

A student of Iyengar Yoga is encouraged toward introspection of body and mind.  This discipline allows the whole person to grow and transform. On the physical (asana) level, poses may be held to integrate the layers of pose into the body and mind or we may work toward a meditative state with a more vigorous practice.  Practitioners may become more mature in their practice with the awareness of where, in their body and mind they may tend to overwork and underwork.  Development of this awareness helps students develop balance and health.

In January of 2019, Craig and Lisa Wolf took over as owners of the Yoga Center.
